Gummies have gone from a novelty to one of the fastest growing supplement formats in India. They also happen to be the hardest common format to manufacture well. If you are planning a gummy brand, these are the things that decide whether your product succeeds or comes back melted.
Pectin or gelatin
This is the first decision and it affects everything else.
- Pectin — plant based, suitable for vegetarian and vegan positioning, which matters a great deal in India. Slightly firmer bite.
- Gelatin — classic chewy texture, generally lower cost, but not vegetarian.
For the Indian market, pectin is usually the safer commercial choice even though it costs more.
Heat is the real enemy
A gummy that survives an air-conditioned lab can still arrive as a single fused lump after a week in a truck. Anti-sticking treatment, the right polishing oil, correct water activity and the right packing all matter. Ask your manufacturer specifically how the product behaves in tropical transit, not just what the shelf life says.
Sugar-free is a formulation change, not a swap
Removing sugar changes the whole gel structure. Erythritol, stevia and allulose each behave differently in texture, sweetness curve and cooling effect. A sugar-free gummy needs its own development cycle — it is not the same recipe with one ingredient replaced.
Actives that are difficult in a gummy
- Vitamin C — heat sensitive during the cook, needs overage and careful process control
- Iron and zinc — strong metallic taste that must be masked
- Omega-3 and vitamin D3 — oil based, so there is a limit to how much can be emulsified into a water-based matrix
- Probiotics — survival through the cook and across shelf life must be proven with data, not assumed
Ask for stability data showing what the active level actually is at the end of shelf life, not just at the start.
Shapes, colours and moulds
Custom moulds are possible but they add cost and time. Standard shapes — bears, cubes, drops, stars — get you to market faster. Natural colours such as spirulina blue, black carrot and turmeric are available if you want to avoid synthetic dyes, though they behave differently over shelf life.
MOQ and timeline
Gummies need a dedicated line setup, so the minimum batch is higher than for tablets or capsules. MOQ is driven by batch value, so a premium formulation needs fewer units than a low-cost one. Standard lead time is 30 to 45 days, longer for a first-time custom formulation because of bench sample and stability work.
What to ask before you commit
- Pectin or gelatin, and why for my product
- Stability data for my specific actives at end of shelf life
- How the product behaves in high-humidity transit
- Whether the line is shared with allergen-containing products
- Certificate of Analysis per batch
